Livelihoods & Food Security Programme Officer

Based in Nairobi, Kenya Programme

Fixed Term Contract for 5 Months

Decades of neglect and under-development have affected the ability of pastoralists and other communities living in Kenya's arid lands to secure their livelihoods.   Oxfam believes that the level of poverty and vulnerability to drought and other hazards in the Arid and Semi Arid Lands is unnecessary and unjust and that everyone in Kenya deserves basic services and living conditions. Today, we seek to maximise impact through significant interlinked sectoral elements in food security and livelihoods (including a range of food assistance programmes, free food distribution, emergency cash transfers, livestock interventions- off-take, restocking, marketing, &animal health; predictable safety nets, livelihood diversification interventions and market based interventions). These projects are designed to address emergency needs as well as putting in place a platform for long-term development and influencing public policy and practice both locally and nationally. The programmes work with primary beneficiaries to increase their capacity, knowledge and skills and address desirable changes in ideas, practices and beliefs.

The Role

In this role, you will provide support to facilitate operational aspects of the programme in consultation with the Livelihoods and Food Security Advisor and Project Managers, supervise the implementation of the livelihoods and food security interventions for the ASAL programme as well as participate in assessments, data collection and analysis of primary and secondary information relevant to  agreed ASAL advocacy and programming initiatives. The incumbent of this position will be expected to participate in the development of new concept notes and proposals, lead in the evaluation and review process for Food Security and Livelihood Projects as well as participate in collaboration activities and joint planning with key partners including relevant Ministries and NGOs working with Oxfam.

What we are looking for

To be successful in this role you will have a degree in Food Security and Livelihoods or a relevant field, with at least 2 years experience in Livelihoods programming with an NGO or similarorganisation. You will have the relevant technical competencies and practical experience in transforming theory to practice, coupled with a good understanding of development issues in pastoral areas. Good communication skills and the ability to represent Oxfam in consortia and coordination fora is key for this role as well as experience in integrating gender, HIV/AIDS, and diversity into programming. You will have good interpersonal skills, as well as excellent written and oral communications skills in English.

How to apply
