Technical Advisor - Ghana


Job Title: Technical Advisor

Location: Ghana

Supervisor: Chief of Party

Duration: 12 months

Summary:

The Ghana WASH Project is looking for a Technical Advisor that would be responsible for providing assistance on a few critical innovative components of the project. Specifically, we would be interested in someone who has a creative marketing background and has demonstrated skills in direct marketing approaches, graphic art, creative writing and media placement.

An ideal candidate would also have an interest in using their skill set to promote a greater good among poor rural communities in Ghana. There will be opportunities to travel within Ghana and interact with rural stakeholders to better assess their needs in the area of water, sanitation and hygiene as we move forward on bringing more innovative approaches to the forefront. We are looking for someone who would like an opportunity to gain international development experience while promoting the greater good in a faced-paced office environment.

Likewise, the technical advisor would serve as a point person in coordinating and producing communication and promotional information from the Ghana WASH Project for Relief International. Success stories, written and visual documentation of activities and assistance in report and mixed media public relations activities will all be integral to the responsibilities of the position.

The technical advisor would work with the Ghana WASH Project program team and would report to the Chief of Party, but would support many other senior members of the Ghana WASH Project team.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

PPP - Assist the Public Private Partnership (PPP) Coordinator in the elaboration of attractive and comprehensive direct marketing materials to encourage private sector entities to invest in the WASH sector as part of their Corporate Social Responsibility objectives. If requested, participate in periodic meetings with private sector partners during the elaborative phases of plan development.

Innovation Contest - Assist the Innovation Contest Coordinator on all aspects of the promotion and elaboration of the contest. This includes, but is not limited to: a. Developing informational materials about the contest to specific audiences (including low literate artisanal populations). b. Assisting the Contest Coordinator on appropriate media purchases, direct marketing campaigns and media placement.
c. Participating in field trips used to promote the innovation contest to targeted audiences which have a high likelihood of d. Developing a strategy which will enable low literate artisans to have a means to submit proposals for their ideas on improving activities in the WASH sector.
e. Serving on the evaluation committee for the innovation contest.

Small Grants Facility - Assist the PPP Coordinator and the Chief of Party in the elaboration and promotion of a Small Grants Facility Mechanism. The Small Grants facility will specifically target existing Ghanaian communities where the Ghana WASH Project is having a positive impact through the provision of WASH sector hardware and software. The facility will also be open to communities in the five regions where we serve where US Peace Corps volunteers are present and can provide support and oversight on the activities in question.
a. Develop marketing materials to promote the Small Grants Facility program, including materials targeted towards low literacy populations.
b. Provide outreach activities among certain groups (communities where English is a common language, within Peace Corps communities, among the Local NGO partners) to promote the small grants facility within their host communities and schools.

Elaboration of Behavior Change Communication Materials – Assist the Deputy Chief of Party in the elaboration of existing and new materials to promote proper practices in the WASH sector. This would include, but not be limited to: a. Producing story boards, posters and flyers which promote safe practices in the WASH sector.
b. Elaborating Community Led Total Sanitation (CLTS) teaching materials to be used to promote low subsidy, demand-driven sanitation solutions in rural Ghanaian communities.

Knowledge Management – The incumbent will be responsible for spearheading the coordination of promotional materials from the field, including photos, GPS coordinates and reports. Likewise, the incumbent will also be responsible for going to the field and investigating story lines on how our interventions have improved the lives of the people in our target community, and writing up success stories (and stories about challenges to be overcome) that can be shared with the parent company and other partners of the Ghana WASH Project.

Qualifications:

One or more years of experience living in the West African context (via the US Peace Corps or another similar endeavour).
Strong demonstrable experience in creative marketing disciplines (graphic design, creative writing). Samples of past products will be requested and could be in electronic or paper formats.
Demonstrated experience using graphic art software.
Knowledge of the WASH sector and specifically Community Led Total Sanitation approaches would be a plus.
Excellent command (both verbal and written) English.
Excellent analytical and organizational skills. Ability to think critically and creatively.
Excellent interpersonal skills, including patience, diplomacy, willingness to listen and respect for colleagues. Must be capable of working both individually and as part of a team.
